Yeah, this quest should come with a health warning. LOTS (000,000's) of XP needed to complete plus enough clay to keep cornish mines in business for a decade.
Only do this if you're really bored....
IMHO I think this quest is v.poorly balanced - too much expenditure for the reward (i.e. $1 per piece of pottery). Anyone know how many QP you get?

Any idea if the "It is quite damp.", "It looks slightly damp.", "It looks almost dry.", "It looks leathery-hard and dry." messages make a difference? I'm doing something wrong, as every piece of pottery seems to explode between checking on it. My skills seem reasonable, and I get good messages when making pottery.

Yeah, the potterny needs to be dry before it's put in the kiln or it will explode. I think it may also need to be dry before it's glazed. You can dry (and cool) pottery quickly buy putting it on the rack.
What message are you getting when you fire it? A success is something like you select a shelf carefully and adjust the airflow. And how long do you leave it in the kiln? It can explode if its left in there too long.

All I get is "You put the fine plate in the pottery kiln."

That means you've failed the firing skill check. You can try taking it out of the kiln, put it on the rack and wait for it to cool down and fire it again or raise your firing skill.

Aha. I should have used the hideously overpowered "help" command, then I would have seen that I should have been "fire"ing instead of "put"ting. Well, at least now I have a ridiculously huge firing bonus Too bad I spent way more xp than I needed to

If I remember correctly, there is a command to check if the stuff in the kiln is ready yet. Perhaps "syntax check" or something while in the room, but I can't remember what the command is, if it existed. All I remember is finding out about it rather late and being annoyed.

Yep, I guess so...
None of you seem to mention 'staining'. Don't you use that pottery ability in any of the stages of the process?

Um... guessed solutions myself, it seems. Didn't find it a tough quest, but 'tis true I have the help of this page...
Staining is not needed for this (bur nice to have and to decorate pottery later...). Bonuses for success aren't that high really... with less then 140/50 I think you can more or less do it. I had around 140-50 and had no problems at all...

Is it possible that more crafts are required than just the cr.po ones?
I've got a bonus of 200 in cr.po.fo and bonuses of 183 in cr.po.gl, cr.po.st and cr.po.fi AND I'm wearing dex gloves and still I just get "You set the wheel turning and start to mould the clay on it. Almost immediately, the clay is flung off it and splatters on the floor." - time after time.
Is it possible there's an intermediate stage before trying to mould the clay into a plate?

Um... lemme see... The problem with you might be in what you are trying to mould. Each different type of pottery implies a different difficulty. Some require over 200 bonus (perhaps, even near 300), but others are easy. 'Bowl' and 'plate' should be easy to mould. I get that message of yours when I try to mould something tough. You haven't mentioned 'throwing'. You do now you need to 'throw' the clay into the pottery wheel, don't you? That requires a 140 bonus too...

Ah, that's it, I didn't know about the throwing

These are the skills I needed to start succeeding. I had a lot of failures at these bonuses, but plenty of money to keep buying clay and was able to get them done properly eventually:
80 crafts.pottery.forming.throwing bonus 151 crafts.pottery.forming.shaping bonus - plate 190 crafts.pottery.forming.shaping bonus - small bowl 101 crafts.pottery.glazing bonus 107 crafts.pottery.firing bonus
A lower glazing bonus might be sufficient, and possibly a somewhat lower bonus for shaping small bowls. The potter doesn't seem to care if the glazing looks bad.

When firing the item in the kiln, there's two different messages you can get when you put it in.
"You select a shelf, carefully place a plain small bowl in the kiln and adjust the air flow." means that you succeeded and the item won't explode.
"You put a plain small bowl in the kiln." means that you failed and the bowl will explode eventually. If you remove it and cool it before it explodes, you can try again on firing it - so you don't have to start over from scratch like you would if it exploded.
