Whenever I start a new character, I run him/her through a number of quick quests that give good amounts of exp for the time invested. Here's a brief list, anyone have any other quests that are good for exping?
-Wine Taster. Moderate XP but also some cash(20$ I think) -Both post office delivery quests can be done extremely quickly with a map, worst case you spend a few bucks on a taxi and make a lot more in return. -Proficient Horticulturalist and Expert Balancer, both involve some experimentation but can be done fairly quickly with a little bit of effort. -Plumber's Mate and City Explorer, similar to the above quests.
What else is out there?

I find the Genua the most rewarding in temrs of XP- some can be done without high skill levels but some of them do require higher skill levels/bonuses

I always do the following, as well as the ones aforementioned. (all are in AM, and easy for the newbie to find)
Apprentice Tanner Belt Buckler City Explorer Practical Joker Gemmy's Mate Handyperson Kinky Shopper Knowledge Seeker Valued Customer Handyman Dog Gone Emancipator Actor Advisor Prolific Paster Cat reliever
All of these are extremely easy, require no skills, and apart from the last three can be completed in a matter of minutes once you know where you're going.
Even though the xp tally for single quests here might not be off the chart, added together you can make considerable progress with just this handful.

My standard start is as follows:
Fix alignment in Pumpkin Town to be +3 good, to become neutral after Go-Between (or +3 better than your ideal alignment)
1) Both post office runs 2) Convert the cash to lancre crowns (25) and head to Brass Neck 3) Double the money with Go-Between 4) Brass Neck Artist
This gives me roughly 750kxp and 200 dollars to kick things off with a new character. I blow that all on initial character development and then:
5) Dinky quests (after investing a little in the smithing skill for weapon forger) 6) Nowhere 7) Death's Domain 8) Genua clacks (only if the gentleman can be found quickly)
Those give a second boost to initial development, and away we go with the new character!
All in all, you should be able to so all this within the first couple of hours, and they're all really easy ones.
