In the shop in Bad Ass you can buy a guidebook. It tells about the marking system in the forest that prevents villagers from getting lost. If I talk to Gordo Smith about 'marking the grooves' and acknowledge I want to help, he says I need a knife, and Martha Headlock probably sells them.
Now, no matter what kind of knife I'm holding, he's telling me this. Apart from the fact that I haven't had an actual 'knife' yet, I'm beginning to wonder if this is something or if it's just a red herring.
Any ideas?

To follow up on myself: you do indeed something that is described as 'knife' (e.g. small knife, carving knife). And he wants to do the work in daylight.

Before the terrain came to Bad Ass you could enter a 'forest' and you needed the book to work your way out. However, this forest was buggy and you could get stuck. I was told by someone who got stuck that a cre told them it was not a quest I don't now remember how you got into this forest. Perhapse its gone?

Right. Whether this is a quest or not, it's still working. You have to do it at the right time, though - from the descriptions it's pretty clear you wouldn't be able to do it in winter, or at night. If you do have the right requirements, you are being taken into the forest (seemingly unrelated to the terrains or anything) where you have to judge the distance to the village, check the markings, then carve them.
I couldn't do the judging - I guess that has to do with other.direction skills (of which I don't have a lot). Looks like a good bit of fun, though, if anybody is willing to investigate further.

Yes, there seem to be two ways of doing this quest. In the winter you are given a beer that when drunk has you wake up in the middle of the forest, and you have to find your way out by following the markings.
In the summer, you are led to the forest and asked to do the carving.
I haven't been able to get out of the forest yet (winter version) - my direction bonus is probably not high enough yet, or I got bored and it was taking too long.

Tried this today (autumn) First Gordo will tell you to go to Marthas to get a knife (the general shop), just nick one not that hard to do. The go back and say you want to help again. He'll tell you to follow Kev, do so, ie "follow Kev". Once in the forest he'll tell you to "judge the distance" to the village. type "judge location to village". The problem I'm having is that my ot.direction is too low, will be back after I find a teacher with good direction teaching bonus.

It might also be of use to know that in the evening (now that is as I'm typing) the syntax doesn't bloody well work (excuse my french... english that is) or it might be the fact that it started snowing. I'll be back *shakes fist*

Also, you can't just go that direction -- you have to "head" that direction. I'm not sure this is a quest, though. I've marked trees and done the "gotten drunk and dumped in the forest" thing.

Oh, it's Head is it? I couldn't work out the syntax for that one.
I'll check it out.

Finished it.
To get the quest you need to both do the summer part and the winter part (at least that's how I did it, doing the summer first).
When you get chucked into the forest you'll need about lvl 35 ot.direction and it may take a while for you to get a successfull skill check. As mentioned about "Head" in the right direction.

It might be useful to know that if you do get lost in the forest, shouting for help brings a helpful woodcutter who'll take you back to Bad Ass

I remember reading on a player's webpage that you were thrown into a big forest if you killed a number of the shopkeepers in the Ramtops. Must be the same forest.

Don't know if this is the same one, but in Escrow you get chucked in the forest if you kill anything that's not a vampire.
