In Brass Neck there's a crying child who's upset because he's lost his expert conker. You can make him a new one with a chestnut and some string, but if you give it to him he just breaks it and complains it's not good enough.
Any ideas? Or is this not even a quest...

Think it was, couldn't figure it out in time. Gone for the winter, though.... I think it may be autumn only.

Don't forget you get a good conker by baking it!

Where's the string, for that matter?

What's the syntax to make the conker? Neither tie nor attach nor string works.

I've now done this quest, and the conker is not baked - if you hang around Annie Spindlewits she complains the children keep stealing her homemade vinegar. Asking about vinegar and then further questions will reveal she uses mould and wine, both found in her pantry. "soak" the conker in the vinegar and it hardens. To attach the string you need to make a hole in the chestnut first! I used a quill I think, not sure as I made the conker last Disc year and not sure of the syntax. Interestingly conkers can also be uses as flail-type weapons.

I feel pretty dumb but I'll be damned if I can figure out how to get mould off the ground let alone into that bottle. I put a potato that was moldy in there but that didn't accomplish the job and whenever I thread a chestnut the chestnut disappears entirely from my inventory along with the string.

Scraping it with a knife or dagger works. Now to get the dang thing to harden.

I don't believe the quest is currently possible as I have the vinegar, the horse chestnut which I pierced, and the string and whenever i thread the string through the chestnut both disappear and you cannot just soak the chestnut itself unless it's some other syntax.

I believe that once the chestnut is pierced and threaded it turns into a conker - its the conker that needs to be soaked. No idea if this will help been a little while since i tried it.

It works in autumn if that is what is required.
