Oh, and if you use 'sayto', you can direct the questions to whichever NPC you want to question, so you don't have the trouble of having to wait until they are alone.

at the end this is what happened for me. perhaps this gives clues to possible questions?
Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: Diane Diamonde was the last person to see Elizabeth Chablis alive, during the late morning in the garden. The corpse was first seen by Mary LeBlanc during the early mid afternoon, meaning the murder must have been comitted during these hours. Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: So, we must then corroborate whereabouts for the late morning, early afternoon and early mid afternoon. A not insignificant task, of course.
Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: No-one is completely covered by alibis, so we must then delve deeper into the mystery.
Poitior Filk exclaims with a Genuan accent: By questioning each of the suspects, we begin to build up a profile of our murderer. We know that the victim was murderd with a bottle of poison. By close cross-examination, we find out that only
Derek Davenport is familiar with the murder weapon. Which makes things somewhat easier!
Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: This means, of course, we have our murderer. But we require proof.
Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: We now build up our profile of our suspects whereabouts after the murder.
Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: Derek Davenport was seen in the lower hallway, drawing room, lower hallway, privy, kitchen, balcony, kitchen and lower hallway. Poitior Filk scratches frantically at his hair. Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: Now the grunt work, of course! Searching these whereabouts for signs of our murderer's nefarious business.
Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: From this, we find the following clues: Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: We find a handful of torn clothing by searching the drawing room.
Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: We find a bottle of poison by searching the balcony. Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: We find a length of rope by searching the kitchen. Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: We find a golden cufflink by searching the lower hallway. Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: We find a bottle of rose petal perfume by searching the kitchen. Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: We know from the corpse what clues fit the murder. Poitior Filk says with a Genuan accent: We have all the clues that link the murderer to the murder. Poitior Filk exclaims with a Genuan accent: And now, from all this, we accuse our murderer! Derek Davenport says with a Genuan accent: Oh, alright... it's a fair cop.
I found the perfume, the rope, the poisoin. However i also found a bogus earring. You need wicked OT.Pe for this. (i have bonus of 170)
I would thing questions like when did you last see murder victim Can you account for your whereabouts (at relevant time) Did you see anybody in (murder room/room with clue in it) what's your job
Also all of the above helps...

hey guys i have tried this quest lots but any time i accuse someone who they say i havent got enough evidence, i have then watched the cop come in and accussed the same person as me and get it right, i have asked the questions you guys have suggested, like when they were alone, who they saw where and, whats their job, who do they like/hate, and found most of the clues 4-5 of them but i must be missing something, what are the details you need to find out about the murderer, any help would be great as i am at my wit's end

I haven't done this quest, but you probably need to find *all* the evidences, before acusing someone. And make sure the killer was in the murder room, by asking the killer's whereabouts to the other suspects. Good luck. Ed.

Man, this one is annoying. Both times I've tried it, I've got the correct suspect, and placed them in all the rooms I needed to. Both times, though, I've failed to find the murder weapon, each time in the privy - I must be missing a hiding place in the privy. Something to do with the mirror, maybe?
An addition to the list of places above - examine the curtains in the ballroom. There's something behind them.
Another tip (something I missed for ages) - examine the corpse several times. It's skillchecked, and you might not get all the clues first time.

What I figure is checked(and correct me if I'm wrong, please is first of all what Fido mentioned, that you have to have seen all 5 clues on the corpse. There are always 5 clues, so just write them down and keep looking at the corpse until you have 5 separate ones. If you haven't seen all 5(not sure if it matters whether you see them in separate looks or not) you won't get the quest even if its the right person. Next, you need to find the objects for all 5 of those clues. I've found up to 7 or 8 objects, which means there are bogus ones around too. Just ignore these however, you need the 5 clues from the corpse otherwise you also won't get the quest even if you accuse the correct person. From then on, the 'detective' bit is to actually ask them all. You -can- theoretically just accuse them right off, without asking questions, but its a fairly big chance that you won't get the right one. But as far as I can tell, the only bit that -is- checked before it gives you quest completed is that you've seen the 5 clues and that you've found the 5 clues, and accused the correct person, of course. Sorry for the long post... tired.

I've done this now. It's really not as hard as it looks, and can be done in an hour.
Examine the body. 'watch high' helps here. Keep doing it until you find five clues. You really do need perception here - 200 bonus at least, I'd say.
Search every hiding place, until you find the five relevant clues.
Ask each suspect when he last saw the victim. This narrows down the time of death.
Ask each suspect what their job is. This narrows down the potiential murderers to those who would know the weapon. It's been two every time I've done it.
Ask every suspect where they saw the potential murderers during the periods between death and discovery of the body (morning, afternoon, evening, etc)
The murderer is the one who knows the weapon and was in every room with a relevant clue in after the time of death.

i must have a hard one...weapon is a club and among my suspects are two asassins, 3 warriors and a sportsman :-(
sports is definately a club and warriors probably are too :-(
oh and btw, when npcs give souls indicating they are nervous, it seems they can give false info....troi told me that he was a butcher, then i asked again and he was an assassin.
This isnt 100% though because jole said he was into sports, got nervous and said he was into sports again without being nervous.
Man thats annoying :-(

ah, that was a challenge. Okay, heres a few tips I think might help from my experience:
*tabulate everything! I used MS word and made a nice big chart. one table contained all the suspect data, and the other contained the victems data, along with the clues and where I found em.
*another tip is that the time of day given when asking npcs if they saw anyone in a room is irrelevant. i.e if one of your suspects was in all of the rooms containing clues but at totally different times like early morning to mid evening, they are still be the criminal. Just because the murder occured at a certain part of the day doesnt mean all the clue rooms will have been visited by the murderer during that same fraction of time.
*Take it slow. If someone makes a nervous move or somthing to indicate a false reply, ask them again until you get a straight answer. This may take some extra time but unless you get the right info, it could completely ruin your investigation. In my case, one of the npcs lied that they were a butcher when they were really an assassin and several times, npcs said they saw no one in the room i requested information on but then reavealed they did witness other npcs when I asked again.
All in all, one of the better thought out quest on the mud I think. ooh! and the 400k XP and 2 ot.pe TMs were very welcome. Enjoy pplz!

Just spent few hours in avail with this one. "guild max of ot.pe plus 5" ? Well, I should've checked the messageboard first. I tried this with only 74 ot.pe and without knowing that the corpse should reveal 5 clues.
Is there something else to know? What is a shortlist that the detective says about? Should there be more than just right person to accuse?
So does it check if you have actually found the evidence or are you just lucky?
Or is it just adding up all the details in your notepad and then deciding who's the killer?
400k worth of exp? Well, that could 'almost' be worth the pain in finding all the pieces. Not while doing it wrong few times and adding up the hours.
But if there is anything more than those questions and checking the room descriptions to know about this one, I would be happy to know before spending any more time on this.

On the bloody ropes!

The only things you absolutely have to do are find all the clues on the body and all the clues hidden in the hotel. If only one suspect knows the weapon, just accuse him/her.
