Sometimes there is an object lying on the ground next to Gut. If you think about him hooking you to his fishing line, and think about that object, it might help. Sometimes the object is not there because it used for another quest, so you will just have to pass by again later.

wear the suspenders and metal boots, and nothing else, if you are too heavy the line breaks.

I did this with djelian of 64, I think he just ask 'will you help me' and after saying yes, he tosses you to the river. You will need a belt and good boots, Belt can be bought in djelibeybi atleast from Coutoure house (the only place I found) which he ties his fishing line on. Unless you have a belt, you will just fall in the river. And the boots part, the main page said that hard leather boots are fine, and They are not Poor boots will get the crocodile bite into your leg for about 500hp damage, so better use something better. Perhaps metal clad boots? I used priests, after I tried it with the hard leather boots. Didn't notice any damage on my priests, so you can propably wear your sunday-shoes on this one. Main page needs an update.

Easier than a belt is just to wear the suspenders that are often lying beside him. Of course these are also quest items and with the quest XP they are there less and less, but they still work if you can get them.

I needed 60 levels of spoken Djelian for Gut to understand me saying "help".
