I'm curious if everyone abides scrupulously to the 'no triggers' rule, or if some of you (like me) prefer to abide only by the spirit of the rule.
If I'm waiting for a one-time event, I often create a trigger (like 'River Road Carriage' - send("enter carriage");) just so I can wander off and have a snack. I think most people are smart enough not to bot, but... well, here is a safe place for you to confess if you do =)

I use sound triggers, color triggers and triggers that make a button appear or change a macro, but none that send commands to the mud.

I use sound triggers just to enhance the room descriptions - ie rain sounds. I use colour triggers for Woops! you dropped ... and for fighting emphasis and HP drops. Again no commands back to the MUD. From my point of view I stick to the spirit of the rules if not the detail. I don't think you should use them for actions that can help you be afk as that is just not cricket! Why play if your afk aside from a small break for a quick P? I don't use them for "one off's" mostly because I'm lazy

I wouldn't ever bot (why bother?), and I don't really use color/sound triggers much (although I should, hrm...) but as for abiding by the spirit of the rules... I mean... the site is devoted to sharing info about quests, which is strictly verboten - not that I would ever find most quests, let alone solve them, without help. Anyway, I interpret the spirit of the rule to mean 'no spamming', and that's how I justify one-off triggers to myself.
I did once have a timed trigger just to keep an idle character online, (send "look"); every few minutes, but I felt guilty and deleted it. Ethics are strange creatures.

colour triggers are not considered triggers I thought as they do not send anything to the mud, ie. they don't prevent you from idling out etc. I couldn't navigate the UU library without colour triggers

The rule about triggers is, as jj1109 said, that they are not allowed to send info back to the mud. Whether they give you a list of npcs around you, or just colour certain words, or trigger sounds, it doesn't matter as long as they don't send a command back to the mud, of any kind.
