Just how do you play instruments? What bonus do you need before you stop harming surrounding folk's ears? I've read the primers, and advanced a fair amount, though I don't sound fair.
Any help is good help!

i started sounding decentish on percussion at about 120-130 bonus and TMed from there. You should also advance cr.mu.performance a bit. I don't think you can TM it so just find someone to learn it off, or learn it yourself, you don't need that many levels

Keep in mind that some instruments are harder to play than others, too.
For example, the lute sold in AM is much easier to play than the lute sold in Genua. The guitar and banjo are comparable to the AM lute. The wooden harp is much harder than all of these.
Not sure about how the others rate.
Has anyone found a website with info on the difficulty of the instruments?

I've found to perform the same with most percussion instruments. I've tried tambourine, cymbals, and bongo drums
