Every so often I catch little drifts of things, and I'm wondering, can they be done currently?
Making quilts (or at least some sort of blanket-y type thing) Making candles Loomwork Distillation
It might be worth listing out some of the non-combat non-quest things that can be done on the Disc. While some such as playing musical instruments and pottery get talked about a lot and other things like repairing the body and objects (mending, fixing, bandaging) are fairly important, there are all sorts of interesting little things that get missed in the general fray.
I don't mean activities that only involve trying to tm, like climbing up and down walls and trees, but activities which produce a result that (if not a physical object) would bring some sort of satisfaction or amusement in and of itself. Decorating music cases, spinning wool or writing messages with charcoal on the wall of the morporkian end of the djelian caravan (or with crayon anywhere).

I'm not an expert on crafts, but I'll briefly go over the ones I know about.
Embroidery Use: Embroid patterns and text on clothes Euquipment: patterns from various embroidery books, threads and a needle. You can also get an unpicker if you don't like the result. Skills: cr.ar.calligraphy for text (not positive on this), cr.ma.needlework and cr.ar.design
Engraving Use: Engrave patterns and text on weapons, armour etc Equipment: Patterns from engraving book (currently only one available is in samurai guild in Bes Pelargic), tool and a file to remove text/patterns Skills: cr.ar.calligraphy for text, cr.sm.bl.tool and cr.ar.design
Dyeing Use: Dye wrapping paper/cloths and wallpaper (not positive on the wallpaper) with patterns Equipment: Marbling tray (1 fixed in ninja guild though you can buy them and put in houses) and dye Skills: cr.ar.design, cr.ma.dyeing
Distilling I haven't played around with this yet, but there is a still in the McSweeney estate (possibly other stills in other estates), there is also a manual in the McS kitchen. At the moment I think you can only make scumble and vodka. This probably uses cr.cul.brewing/cr.cul.distilling
Pottery Worthwhile mentioning that there is a pottery room in the Sung estate with new types of objects to make (eg sake jugs) and new types of stains and glazes. Uses the entire pottery branch in the crafts tree as well as cr.ar.design for the staining process.
Other crafts: - Its possible to decorate musical instrument cases in the music guild in AM, there are also other boxes you can decorate from the ninja guild -Quilting - you can buy squares and sew them together to make a quilt, I think it uses cr.ma.needlework, see embroidery above if you want to put patterns on the squares. The quilt can then be hung on a wall -Wallpaper - You can customise wall paper for homes, as well as dyeing you can imprint (or something) an item onto it - eg a dagger or someones skull. -Baking - I've heard of witches baking gingerbread houses, I don't know any specifics though

You can make candles at the witch cottage in Mad Wolf.
You need some empty honey combs and a wick. You can get the honey combs from a bee hive and shake the honey out of them. The wicks can sometimes be found in the cupboards of the Mad Wolf witch cottage and they are sold in one of the shops in one of the Mountain villages. (Sorry, don't have time to log in to check which one right now.)
Not sure which skills it uses.

You open the dog-eared manual to page 1. > read manual You read page one of the dog-eared manual: Written in neatly-printed pictograms in Agatean:
The Ingredients
When the honourable distiller shall start with the ancient process of producing alcoholic beverages, one humbly entreats the distiller to pump water into the distillation vat before one adds any other ingredients. Should the honoured one be satisfied that there is proper water in the vat, then it is advisable for the main ingredients to be added. These may often be dry ingredients, to be mixed in with the water.
open manual to 2 You open the dog-eared manual to page 2. > read it You read page two of the dog-eared manual: Written in neatly-printed pictograms in Agatean:
Cooking
When the respected distiller is content with the mixture of ingredients within the vat, one may wish to cook the contents for the proscribed amount of time. Of course the honoured distiller has such awe inspiring skill and knowledge as to know exactly how long the specific ingredients need to be cooked. It is, nevertheless, but dared to make the humblest suggestion that one check the vat from time to time in order to ensure the success of the process. The skill of the honoured and respected distiller is, of course, not questioned, but such may be the impurities in the vat and the surrounding climate that danger always lurks. open manual to 3 You open the dog-eared manual to page 3. > read it You read page three of the dog-eared manual: Written in neatly-printed pictograms in Agatean:
Sieving
As the honoured distiller has finished the process of cooking the ingredients, one may find it prudent to sieve the solids from the vat, so as to purify its contents. One could but hope that lesser craftsmen would take such pursuit of purity and perfection as much to heart as the master distiller.
> open manual to 4 read it You open the dog-eared manual to page 4. > You read page four of the dog-eared manual: Written in neatly-printed pictograms in Agatean:
Fermenting
One of the more crucial aspects in the distillation process is, as the honourable one of course knows, the process of fermentation. Once the respected distiller is certain that the contents of the distillation vat are sieved to satisfactory purity, it is time for fermenting the contents of the vat. As always, the skilled distiller will have no trouble with this important stage, yet it is known that lesser aspirants have ruined the entire contents of the vat in their attempts of fermenting.
> open manual to 5 You open the dog-eared manual to page 5. > read it You read page five of the open dog-eared manual: Written in neatly-printed pictograms in Agatean:
Distilling
The final stage of the distillation process has approaced once the contents of the vat have been properly fermented to achieve the necessary state. The true distiller magnificently proves the years of training and learning in this final step of distilling the contents of the vat. The false distiller, may see the watered-down results of the poorly skilled distillation having ended in failure.
I can't take it out to distil, so if someone has any clue, please say it

I assume the aforementioned candle is a beeswax candle?

Tried candlemaking. In addition to honeycombs for wax, you can also use the lumps of wax that can be bought (along with wicks) in Escrow. Couldn't find any wicks at Flaudia's, though they may've just been taken. You make the candles at her stove, by placing the wick and whatever wax source you've got in the mold. No idea what skills it used, but it's probably 150 or under. Both types of wax I used came out with a beeswax candle.
Speaking of Escrow, I still love the fairgrounds, even if they are money sucks.
Still no clue where one gets materials for quilting, and I haven't gotten around to distillation (is it in a McSweeney-only area?).

Found the candles. You can buy lumps of wax from the Escrow store on Garlic Way, at the same place you buy wicks, or you can make them by putting an empty honeycomb into the stove without a wick. Not that you'd need to, though.
If it uses any skills, they'd be meagre. I have a 50 bonus in most of my crafts (any that could be applicable) and I had no problem.

Quilting needs needlework and you need to buy scissors and a quilting needle . A guide is available from the shop in loom alley outlining exactly what you need.
The guide lowers the skills you need. You need to cut pattern from pattern book , cutting from a block. Quilts are made by appliquing the patterns to blocks and then sewing the blocks together.
You can get all the equipment from the shop on loom alley in am. takes fairly low skills (level 30 in needlework (bonus 120 plus))
I made a quilt with 9 blocks? (I think a big one is 12?) and then promptly lost it. Cost me a round a royal to buy the materials.

Don't think so...
btw, you've forgotten some of the 'ninja' craft skills, a few of them accesible. You have lots of information about them in Hotaru's Ninja Niche. Marbling, for example, wrapping and decorating can be done by everybody with the right materials and skills. Flower arranging I think might be guild-exclusive, like the tea-ceremony. It would be interesting if some places for this activities were to open in Bes Pelargic for non-assassins...
